GB Women team shot with players and staff in Malmo

Last weekend, 19 – 21st May 2023, GB Women competed in the Malmö Lady Intercup in Malmö, Sweden.

GB’s group included Tokyo 2020 medal winners Turkey, USA and Japan which guaranteed a competitive experience for our squad. The group was completed by Paris 2024 Hosts France.

GB showed their resilience in defence throughout their games, demonstrating their ability to compete with the world’s best teams for long periods of the game.

They also demonstrated progression in attack, scoring a good number of open play and penalty goals against every team.

The most impressive scoring display came against France with the game residing in a 12-2 victory.

Overall, GB placed 8th in the tournament, following a narrow one goal defeat to Canada in their final placing match.

This competition was attended by some of the best female teams in the world and was seen as the key women’s competition of the international goalball calendar.

Aaron Ford, Head Coach for GB Women at Goalball UK said “This weekend has been an excellent development experience for our squad. We have been brave and experimented with new formations and tactical approaches to games which we feel will only help our preparations for major competitions later this year. Throughout, we have been competitive for long periods in every game, learnt lots about ourselves and our opposition and continued to demonstrate solid defence, holding our own to the final moments in some key games.

We’ll take a lot from this opportunity to compete Internationally and our joint training day with the Canadian national team. We’re really looking forward to competing again at the World Games in August, putting all our newfound experience to good use on home soil.”
