Each Thursday we want to put the spotlight on a person involved with goalball – from players, officials, coaches, or anyone.
This week we caught up with Ameen Memon!
What club do you play for or coach?
I play for South Yorkshire on the Novice team.
How did you discover goalball?
A community support worker from the Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind (SRSB) recommended goalball to me as I was looking for an accessible sports activity. I gave it a try in 2018 and have been playing since then.
Is there a particular song, artist or genre that you listen to before a tournament to get in the mood? Or anything you’re loving at the moment?
I listen to a Pakistani cricket themed song that helps me get my motivation high. It goes something like “Say o ay o aa hay koi hum jesa” which means we are the best and no one can beat us!
Do you have any pre-game superstitions or rituals?
Not really. I always try to be well rested before the game and be in the moment during the game.
Do you have a favourite post-match meal?
I love a nice kebab if I can grab one or a McDonalds.
Which goalball player do you admire the most and why?
I haven’t watched much goalball but everyone I have met, at training sessions and tournaments, is great.
Outside of goalball, what other hobbies/sports do you do?
I like to bake sometimes and enjoy a walk in the countryside.
Finally, what place, anywhere in the world, is on your bucket list to visit and why?
The Maldives. I have been there already but would like to go again. I love the blue skies and water.
