Each Thursday we want to put the spotlight on a person involved with goalball – from players, officials to coaches, or anyone!
We want to use this opportunity where we have a bit more time on our hands to get to know you all a little bit better before getting back on the court!
This week we caught up with Kerry and Connie O’Brien of Merseyside Sharks!
How did you discover goalball?
I was studying disability sports coaching at university and was invited by Roy Turnham to come along to the SAVI multi sports club. I then began volunteering at the club and Matt Cliff introduced me to goalball. It amazed me and I then got the chance to coach the Merseyside team at a tournament, so I brought my daughter Connie along to the session and she tried the sport, loved it and joined the novice side.
Is there a particular song, artist or genre that you listen to before a tournament to get in the mood?
I enjoy listening to different types of music. My favourite being R&B classics, however Connie enjoys the more up to date songs! Anything she can tiktok to on the long journey to competitions!
Do you have any pre-game superstitions or rituals?
I am not really that superstitious but Connie likes to wear the same trainers for luck. On journeys to Sheffield for competitions though, I do avoid the Snake Pass as I think it’s unlucky!
Do you have a favourite post-match meal?
Our post-match meal is definitely a McDonald’s or KFC!
Which goalball player do you admire the most and why?
That is such a hard question as I admire all the players, staff and volunteers at Goalball UK. The Merseyside team obviously hold a special place in my heart, but every single person involved at Goalball UK are amazing!
Outside of goalball, what other hobbies/sports do you do?
Connie enjoys playing netball and I enjoy running; however I am a bit unfit. My other passion is Liverpool FC, much to Kathryn Fielding’s displeasure!
Finally, what place, anywhere in the world, is on your bucket list to visit and why?
I would love to go to Disneyland in Florida. Connie has been and told me how amazing it is so I’d love to be able to go with her.
