Every Thursday we put the spotlight on the people involved with goalball – from players, officials, coaches, supporters and more.
This week we caught up with Robyn Gell.
What club do you play for or coach?
I am part of the #FindTheNext Goalball Academy. I have played for RNC Sport Academy for the past couple of seasons, but I have left there now as I have just started at Birmingham City University.
How did you discover goalball?
I first played when I was about 7 when I used to attend Sheffield Actionnaires. I played a little bit at school, just for fun, and started playing competitively when I went to study at RNC.
Is there a particular song, artist or genre that you listen to before a tournament to get in the mood? Or anything you’re loving at the moment?
I am slightly obsessed by Irish music! I especially like The High Kings and Seamus Kennedy.
Do you have any pre-game superstitions or rituals?
I need a good amount of coffee!
Do you have a favourite post-match meal?
It’s got to be a McDonalds! Twenty Chicken McNuggets with fries and a diet coke – with no ice as I’m fussy!
Which goalball player do you admire the most and why?
Meme Robertson. I have trained and played alongside her at RNC and she is great.
Outside of goalball, what other hobbies/sports do you do?
I enjoy breakdancing. I also like listening to music, eating and generally chilling out!
Finally, what place, anywhere in the world, is on your bucket list to visit and why?
I would like to go to Dublin as Irish people are so friendly and happy. I would also be able to listen to some good music whilst having a pint of Guinness!
