Each Thursday we want to put the spotlight on a person involved with goalball – from players, officials to coaches, or anyone
This week we caught up with Chris Fenton!
What club do you play for or coach?
I play for West Yorkshire at Intermediate level.
How did you discover goalball?
It was recommended to me by the Transitions Co-ordinator at RNIB. I went along to my first training session in February 2016 and started playing in tournaments soon after.
Is there a particular song, artist or genre that you listen to before a tournament to get in the mood? Or anything you’re loving at the moment?
I like Linkin Park. My favourite song of theirs is ‘What I’ve done’.
Do you have any pre-game superstitions or rituals?
I like to pack my bag the night before but then still end up checking it a million times the next morning! I also usually like to have a cheese and ham omelette for breakfast but other than that I’m quite chilled.
Do you have a favourite post-match meal?
If the tournament is in Sheffield, we often go to TGI Friday’s afterwards. I like chicken strips and chips.
Which goalball player do you admire the most and why?
Brittany Stead. She is a very experienced player, having represented GB, but I admire her for her resilience as she has had setbacks with injury and illness but has come back strong from them. She is also a great cook so keeps me well fuelled!
Outside of goalball, what other hobbies/sports do you do?
I like football. I support Leeds United and used to play for Danby Rovers but had to stop as I was struggling to see the ball. Instead, I go cycling now on a Saturday with Tandem Trekkers. I also like playing video games, watching films, and eating out.
Finally, what place, anywhere in the world, is on your bucket list to visit and why?
I’d like to go to Italy – Rome in particular to visit The Colosseum – and to eat lots of lovely food! I’d also quite like to go to America to Disneyland!
