GB Women reach IBSA European Championships Semi Final

Both GB goalball squads battled it out in their quarter final games today, 14 December 2023, in hopes of progressing to the semi-finals of the European A Division.

Success came early in the day with a determined victory for GB Women against Finland as they closed the game with a 7-1 win to secure their place in the semis.

For GB Men, a tough game followed against Turkey’s national team. Our Men held the Turkish players to account in the first half drawing 1 all right up until the last minute of the first half. The second half did not go our way with Turkey running away with a 13-3 victory to claim their place in the semis.

Tomorrow, Friday 15 December, Goalball UK’s squads will play as follows:

5th – 8th place: GB Men  v Finland 11:45am

Semi final: GB Women  v Israel  1:00pm

Speaking from Montenegro, Gary Fraser High-Performance Lead at Goalball UK said “We are delighted with the performance of our Women’s team as they overcame Finland to book their place in the semi-final. The team has grown in strength as the tournament has progressed, and we look forward to facing Israel tomorrow in what will be an exciting match. It was disappointment for our Men’s team who lost out to Turkey in their quarter final and will now play off for the 5 – 8 places. Their first match is against Finland tomorrow. They can take many positives from performances so far and will battle to finish as high as possible.”

A livestream will be available on IBSA’s YouTube channel.
