Goalball UK social media blackout

From 15:00 on Friday 30 April to 23:59 on Monday 3 May, Goalball UK will join football’s blackout of social media in a show of solidarity against online discrimination and harassment.

While we are thankful that goalball players across the country have not encountered such horrendous discrimination and harassment on social media platforms, we are united with the wider sporting family in our commitment to fighting all online abuse.

These actions clearly have no part in society, and that certainly includes sport. Sport has an incredible power to bring everyone together and break down barriers. In this day and age, social media plays an integral part in this, alongside widening audiences and connecting us with communities.

However, it is apparent that these platforms are increasingly being utilised by a minority to spread hateful messages. This must not be allowed to continue. Users must be able to access social media safely in the knowledge they do not risk facing such appalling abuse.
