Goalball UK have been selected as Brethertons Solicitors LLP Charity of the Year for 2022/2023.

Brethertons are kicking off their fundraising this weekend as they take on the Autumn Wolf Run 2022 – a tough mudder style 10km run tackling obstacles, water and more! The team are fundraising online for Goalball UK now.

Goalball UK is a charity that aims to transform the lives of blind and partially sighted people through the sport of goalball. Goalball is a unique team sport, it is a fast paced, action-packed indoor game of attack and defence with no able-bodied equivalent.

Goalball was invented in 1946 to help the rehabilitation of blinded war veterans. It was introduced to the Paralympics in 1976 and is one of the only sports specifically designed for visually impaired (VI) athletes, rather than an adaptation of another sport.

Goalball UK are driven to transform people’s lives through the sport by; building inclusive partnerships, creating safe and exciting opportunities, empowering through ownership, connecting people, and creating positive communities for those that are blind and partially sighted. Today goalball is played across the UK, but it needs more recognition and that is where Brethertons want to help.

Brethertons staff were given the opportunity to put forward a charity detailing what they do, who they help and why they felt Brethertons should support them. A select committee then narrowed the field based on our overall company values and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) principals. A final vote by over 150 staff resulted in Goalball UK being chosen as our charity for 2022/2023 as this charity is very close to a member of the Brethertons’ team heart.

The charity of the year selection comes as part of Brethertons wider CSR commitment to be a responsible business that has a positive impact on the environment, community, and people.

Sophie Wragg, Head of the CSR committee said, ‘As a firm, we understand the importance of supporting our local community and the wider community. Goalball UK needs the support and funding of firms like ours to keep transforming the lives of those who are blind and partially sighted. We are really excited to be fundraising over the next year and hopefully help make some positive changes to the lives of people who are blind or partially sighted.”

Throughout the coming year, Brethertons will be holding a series of events and activities to support our chosen charity from cake sales to mountain climbs and a few days of fancy dress – all for a good cause.

Mark Winder, CEO of Goalball UK said “We are delighted to have Brethertons’ support over the next year. It means a lot to us that one of the team is already aware of the impact of our work. We are looking forward to cheering the Brethertons team on in their events and raising funds to grow goalball in the UK so more people can benefit.”
