Goalballer Kelsey, smiling, with BBC presenter Matt Baker. Used in promotion of the 2019 Children in Need Rickshaw ChallengeEach week we are digging through the Goalball UK archives to look back at some of our favourite memories from the sport from years gone by.

As it is Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re taking a look back at our Transforming People’s Live campaign and slogan that was launched back in 2014.

This message was, and remains, at the heart of everything we do as a National Governing Body. As an ethos, it inspires us every day to give as many blind and partially sighted people as possible the opportunity to play goalball. We truly believe the impact the sport can have is remarkable, not only on participants’ physical health, but their mental health as well.

As we plan for the future, the Transforming People’s Lives philosophy that was developed six years ago will play an integral part in our new strategy, Transforming More Lives. It incorporates five key values that enable us to deliver on the promise of the slogan, these are:

  • Building inclusive partnerships
  • Creating safe, exciting opportunities
  • Empowering through ownership
  • Connecting the goalball family
  • Creating Positive Communities

You can read more about the new strategy here, but first, check out the original video we created to support the launch of Transforming People’s Lives – which includes many goalball legends. Enjoy!

We have chosen to have a picture of Kelsey to accompany this story because he is a great example of the transformative power of goalball. He spoke in depth about how the sport has helped him and you can watch this below:
