Safeguarding Training
Goalball UK is committed to ensuring that everyone involved in our sport has the knowledge, confidence, and skills to safeguard children, young people, and adults at risk.
We expect all staff, coaches, officials, volunteers, and Welfare Officers to complete appropriate safeguarding training relevant to their role. The training listed below reflects current CPSU, UK Coaching, and Ann Craft Trust best practice.
Safeguarding Children and Young People
Basic Safeguarding Training
This training is required for anyone who has regular contact with children or young people, including coaches, volunteers, officials, and staff.
It is also a prerequisite for anyone wishing to become a Club Welfare Officer.
Course title: Safeguarding & Protecting Children
Provider: UK Coaching
Delivery method: Face to face or virtual classroom
Duration: Approximately 3 hours
This course:
- Raises awareness of abuse and poor practice
- Explains how to recognise concerns
- Provides guidance on how to respond appropriately and confidently

Club Welfare Officer Training (Specialist)
This training is recommended for anyone taking on, or already in, the role of Club Welfare Officer.
Participants must have completed basic safeguarding training before attending.
Course title: Time to Listen
Provider: UK Coaching
Delivery method: Face to face or online
Duration: 3–4 hours
This course:
- Explains the role and responsibilities of a Welfare Officer
- Covers how to manage concerns and referrals
- Helps Welfare Officers understand the role of statutory agencies in safeguarding

Safeguarding Adults at Risk
Following the Care Act 2014, safeguarding adults training is essential for those supporting adults who may be at risk. Goalball UK recognises Ann Craft Trust as the sector lead for safeguarding adults in sport and physical activity.
Basic Awareness Training
Suitable for everyone involved in sport and activity, including coaches, volunteers, and staff.
Course title: An Introduction to Safeguarding Adults
Provider: Ann Craft Trust
Delivery method: E‑learning
This course:
- Introduces safeguarding adults principles
- Explains signs of abuse and neglect
- Supports confident reporting and good practice
Specialist Training – Coaches
Recommended for coaches and leaders working directly with adults at risk.
Course title: Safeguarding Adults in Physical Activity and Sport
Provider: UK Coaching
Delivery method: E‑learning
This course:
- Focuses on safeguarding within coaching and activity settings
- Explores professional boundaries and safe practice

Specialist Training – Welfare Officers
Recommended for Club Welfare Officers or Safeguarding Officers who oversee safeguarding adults.
Course title: Essential Training for Club Welfare / Safeguarding Officers
Provider: Ann Craft Trust
Delivery method: Online
Duration: Approximately 3 hours
This course:
- Develops confidence in managing adult safeguarding concerns
- Clarifies thresholds, consent, and information sharing
- Supports effective liaison with statutory services

Keeping training up to date
Safeguarding training should be refreshed regularly to reflect changes in guidance, legislation, and good practice. Goalball UK recommends refresher training at least every three years, or sooner if guidance changes or concerns arise.
